This is a sample, so the names have come out — but the shape is real. Nine days that start in Chania and work inland, planned the way I plan every trip: I find the hour a day is really about, then build the rest of the day around it so it never feels like a schedule. Two of those hours are marked on the pages below. Three nights inside the old town, on foot the whole time — the first day does almost nothing on purpose.

6:00pNothing but a walk. The Venetian quarter is a knot of lanes that only makes sense on foot, and the first evening is for getting lost in it

9:00aThe covered market and the streets behind it, while the town is still doing its own shopping rather than yours

1:00pLunch somewhere in the shade, then the flat part of the afternoon — this is a swim or a nap, not a museum

7:30pMagic hourA table on the Venetian quay as the light goes amber off the harbour wall and the lighthouse comes upThis is the hour the day is built backwards from. It runs about forty minutes in early autumn, so the table is booked for seven-thirty and the walk over starts at seven-fifteen — close enough to watch it arrive, early enough to still get the seat facing out.

Twenty minutes out of town and the peninsula goes quiet: coves, a monastery road, and water that stays warm into October.
